This week, on Plant Tip Tuesday...
We're talking about the fabulous Zamioculcas zamiifolia! There is a reason we love a ZZ Plant!
This low-maintenance plant certainly makes a statement with its naturally glossy leaves and aesthetically striking growth habit.
ZZ’s prefer a bright filtered light location but can also tolerate lower light. However, an issue that can occur with having them in low light is that the stems can become “stretched” which results in elongated spaces between the leaves, and stems can become weak and may need to be staked.
A great thing about ZZ’s is that they like to go on the dry side. They have a thick tuberous root system that stores water. Small consistent watering is best, and over watering could result in root rot. They will require less water in a low light situation. Their unique root system requires well draining soil along with gentle aeration on a regular basis.
A cool variety of the ZZ is the “Raven” ZZ! The new growth emerges green and as the foliage matures it turns into a stunning almost black colour. The “Raven” needs a bright filtered light location to get the colouration in the leaves.
This plant loves to be tight it it’s pot and should only be repotted when it has filled up most of it container. But don’t forget to top dress to keep the soil fresh and add depleted nutrients.
They are light feeders and only need a mild indoor fertilizer 2-3 times during the growing season.
ZZ’s are wonderful plants for the beginners and hobbyists alike!
