This Week on Plant Tip Tuesday...
We're highlighting the showstopping Anthurium!
Anthuriums are an enormous genus consisting of over 800 species.
The literal translation mean “Tail Flower” and they have a few different common names such as Painter’s Pallet, Painted Tongue and Flamingo Flower. They symbolise good fortune and protection which make them great host or housewarming gifts. Anthuriums are also a desired gift for anniversaries because of their heart shape and common Reds, Burgundy, and Pinks colours.
The blooms on Anthuriums are quite fascinating! They consist of a Spadix which is the spike that contains many very tiny flowers, and a Spathe which is the colourful leaf-like bract.
These plants are relatively easy to care for! A bright filtered light location is ideal. They can tolerate lower light situations, but they are less likely to re-flower. They like to dry slightly in between watering, but don’t appreciate being dehydrated. They have an extensive root system and can suffer if not getting sufficient waterings. Because they have an extensive root system, they like to be re-potted about every two to three years, gradually going up in pot size by an inch or two. They bloom frequently and a mild blooming fertilizer during March to October will help to develop more and stronger blooms.
These easy to care for beauties will add visual interest to any space!
